Starting the Garden!

Now that the weather has been nice enough for the ground to thaw out, we've been able to start our veggie garden!

First week of work has involved quite a bit of digging, even Adalyn stepped up to help!

  1. Avoid taring up all the sod... put wet cardboard on top then put a layer of black earth on top, wet it, then put a layer of dried leaves, wet them... check out "Lasagna Gardening" on the internet.... make life easy for yourselves... Make gardening fun... not backbreaking work... :)

  2. Thanks for the great tips Mononcle! Anything to avoid strenuous work is a good idea in my book! We've also read that putting a layer of newspaper, mulch, and then triple mix on the top is a good way to do it too!

    1. I'm sure you guys are going to love gardening... it's nice to see the whole family involved in the project.

You're right about putting down thick layers of newspaper. If you still have the sod, don't throw it out... you can either put it back on the ground and put your layers of wet newspaper or wet cardboard on top of it and continue to build your lasagna layers alternating, black, brown, green layers until you reach 8" to a foot deep... you can mix the sod in your compost heep and use it later in the season when it's all decomposed into rich food for the garden soil.

Can't wait to see what vegetables your going to plant...
